Student Break | Roni Pinkas | Wearable Typography
When you mix two of my all time favorites, in this case typography and accessories, there is no way I’m gonna pass the opportunity to write about it even if it was created back in 2010. Roni Pinkas, the young designer behind all this typographic party, created it all as part of her graduate project at the Jewelry Design Department at Shenkar College.
I don’t know what about you, but I feel like I can wear each and every piece. Old typewriting keyboards, wooden letters, metal letters, contoured letters… I really don’t care, as long as it’s typolichius I’d be happy to wear it!

Student Break | Dana Mantzur | The White City Turned Silver
Lately I keep on discovering so many exciting designers and their pieces from years ago… I hope you don’t mind me writing about all these findings just now.
-
Dana Mantzur and her Bauhaus jeweleries made me smile. It’s almost everyday that I pass by Tel Aviv’s White City buildings and now discovering some of them as jewelries make me love them even more. Well, it’s like having a close close bond with this super exciting city.
FYI, these pieces are part of Dana’s 2009 graduation project at Shenkar College.

Is it already time for another Milan Design Week? I had so much fun writing about all the amazing designers last year! This time I’ll have to see it all once I get back from my trip. I had to share with you the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design 2012 Design Bonanza. If you are among the lucky ones who’ll be visiting the streets of Milan and the corridors of Ventura Lambrate during Milan Salone Internazionale del Mobile, you’ll be able to see at first hand 50 super exciting projects from the students of the Industrial Design Department. BTW, the curators behind it all are: Prof. Ezri Tarazi, Haim Parnas and Galit Shvo.

Student Break | Yael Reshef | After ParTEA
After ParTEA. Such a brilliant tittle for a beautiful collection! Yael Reshef, a 2011 graduate of the Fashion Design Department at Shenkar College flew under my radar but luckily I found her.
Yael began her journey with the English afternoon tea ceremony and the blue glazed porcelain tableware that is identified with it. I’ve already seen porcelain being used as an accessory before, but there is something quite unique and pure in the way Yael used it as her main element. Sometimes you should let the material do the talking…
Speaking of tea time, did you hear about this place? I need to go there…

Student Break | Shani Kraset | Black and White Fossils
About a month ago, Galit Barak, one of the most enthusiastic and nicest students I have ever met invited me to the presentation of “Textile Jewelry” at the Shenkar College. One of the projects that excited me the most was the black and white world of Shani Kraset, a third year student at the Textile Design Department. Parts of old watches and leather like fabrics where the setting for dealing with dimension of time, reflection and the element of beauty, using symmetry and geometry. I wish you could have seen this garden of beautiful fossils with your own two eyes!

  • Shimon Cornfeld | Ceramics and Glass Department
  • Yaakov Aranbayev | Jewelry and Fashion Department
  • Ella Uzan | Screen Based Arts Department
  • Inbal Garzon | Ceramics and Glass Department
  • Danielle Fischer | Fine Arts Department
The minds behind Bezalel Art and Design Academy out did themselves! With Facebook launching it’s timeline, Bezalel is also introducing it’s very own artistic timeline. You can find lots of inspiration from their students and recent graduates but above all you can spend hours and hours starring at all the projects you didn’t know about untill now. FYI, this timeline is Hebrew friendly but I’m pretty sure you can find your way easily.

I feel a bit behind with my own Facebook page… I think it’s time I start to work on DesignBreak’s timeline ;)

Student Break | Yevgeni Krachak | Home and Away
When it’s cold and rainy outside, all I want to do is crawl under my duvet. For some reason Yevgeni Krachak’s Homeless animation feels like a good fit. His little creature is searching for a proper home and it’s adorable face expressions make me want to adopt him. I know, I know it’s only an animation… I’m having hard time separating fiction and real life ;)
BTW, Yevgeni is a third year student at the Screen-Based Arts Department at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design.

Student Break | Chen Pony Shafir | Take Me To The Dark Side

Back in the day, as a student, I studied quite a bit about “Still life” painting. Not sure if it’s the right time or place to share with you my thoughts on the subject but then again… I feel like the same thoughts were the trigger for Chen Pony Shafir’s collection.
Chen’s dark side is shown in this mysterious journey she took upon herself…
BTW, Chen is a graduate of the Fashion Design Department at Shenkar College.
-
Meanwhile, Chen began her internship at Mary Katrantzou‘s studio and I’m curious about what’s next to come.

Student Break | Efrat Goldstien | Little Women

During her first three years in school, Efrat Goldstien used only black and white… Who would have known that this girl will have the most vibrant collection of them all?! Efrat’s project deals with her criticism against the women of the fifties and their role at home. By humor and exaggeration she tried to emphasize how women were one dimensional. I’m blown away by every little detail in this collection!
In times like this, I wish I could upload larger images!!!
FYI, Efrat is a graduate of the Fashion Design Department at Shenkar College.

Student Break | Chen Bar Kalifa | Lost in Translation

Natural disasters. We don’t have too many around here but last year the disruptive fire that killed most of the Carmel Forest was one of those moments you can’t leave behind…
Most of Chen Bar Kalifa’s childhood memories vanished with this fire and suddenly his colorful memories transformed into a sad world of muted nature. Chen’s sensitive eye and his way of telling his own story through his art is breathtaking! I can honestly say I can’t wait for his next collection. FYI, Chen is a graduate of the Fashion Design Department at Shenkar College.

Student Break | Lenny Uzan | R for Red

In “Captive”, Lenny Uzan’s graduation project, there is a dialog between two artists. First, the Palestinian Mona Hatoum, who exposes in her work the experience of displacement, detachment and wandering, while raising questions about freedom and political borders. By her side the Israeli Erez Israeli, who copes with bereavement, death, memorial, forgetfulness and monumentality. Lenny’s collection tells the story of the duality of our lives. BTW, Lenny is a 2011 graduate of the Fashion Design Department at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.

Student Break | Maayan Hod | Here Comes The Sun

Maayan Hod is one of those graduates that I know nothing about and maybe it’s a good thing cause I can play the guessing game, which I really enjoy.
I’m gonna keep thinking about the layering and double meaning for a while. If any of you can figure out what’s behind this oh so complicated atmosphere I would appreciate your comments. Until then, I’m gonna focus on these vibrant and happy colors.
Yep, yellow makes me happy. There I said it! Oh, Maayan is a graduate of the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design.

Student Break | Hila Martuzana | The Rhythm of Paper

The cycle of nature and the transition between seasons are the inspiration behind Hila Martuzana’s collection. Changes in climate, motion, rhythm, smells and feelings, all of which are the focal point in this white parade. I can go on and on about the logistics and inspiration behind it all but the fact of the matter is I can’t keep my eyes of it. I’m SO impressed by the fact that Hila chose paper as her main material. It makes me want to give her a big hug and tell her that I wish her next adventure will include lots and lots of paper! FYI, hila is a graduate of The Kibbutzim College.

Student Break | Lilach Eliyahu | Sweet Child of Mine

TLV Fashion Week is happening as we speak so I decided to have a fashion week of my own with my favorite 2011 graduates.
-
First in line is Lilach Eliyahu, a graduate of the Fashion Design Department at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. This girl knows you don’t have to be too serious when it comes to fashion to get it done right! As a child Lilach moved a lot and saying goodbye wasn’t easy. All those bad memories led her to take doll parts and little girl cloths and start something new. Although the collection looks colorful and sweet, when you take a closer look you’ll see that it is not as sweet as it seems.

One On One Break | Ruta Reifen | The Metal Princes

  • Floral Charades Collection
  • Petite Foreal Collection
  • Waiting For Godot Collection
  • Petite Foreal Collection
  • Waiting For Godot Collection
Belive it or not, my first post ever was about Ruta Reifen’s graduation project. I remember how amazed I was starring at her “Waiting for Godot” for a very long time. A lot has changed since then. Ruta is on her way to become a jewelry rock star in the city of all possibilities NYC and me… well you know, I’m here.
The one thing that hasn’t change is Ruta’s ability to treat metal as her own bread and butter. This girl with the big bright eyes and the most radient face is my next One On One Break.

www.rutareifen.com
I’d love to hear about you, your journey, how it all began.
After high school my family and I moved to London for a year. I studied in acting school full-time, theatre was and still is my first love. I decided to take evening beginners Jewelry making class with Liz Collins at Central Saint Martins College of Art. I was 17 at the time and had no idea what a great opportunity this would be. I immediately fell head over heels for the craft of silversmithing- I knew then and there that I belong at a jewelry bench with saw blades, files, torches, wax carving tools, drill bits, hammers, burrs, and most importantly METAL. It was so great, I used to sneak into classes that I wasn’t registered for just to keep working. So I ended up at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design and majored in Jewelry Design. Immediately after I continued my academic journey at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence RI, to get my MFA.RutaReifen
Can you describe your work process for me?
My process is so specific; I can’t resist it even though I’ve tried. Before I embark on a new or continue a body of work, I have many sleepless nights. I cannot sleep because I’m constantly thinking about the work. When I approach my bench, I let the mind rest and my intuition completely takes over. The aesthetic quality of my work is incredibly important to me and composition is everything!!! Maker hat is on, and the work begins.RutaReifen
Which materials do you work with?
Primarily metal, this material never ceases to challenge me as a maker. Gold, Silver, Copper they are elements- isn’t that crazy and fabulous?
I always use one more material; this is where the materiality and crafting of the work become a part of its conceptual content. I love combining earthy substances with metal, they contrast as well as compliment each other.
Recently I’ve been using Auto-motive paint with metal; I use it in a way so they enhance each other.
RutaReifen
What is the most unusual piece you have ever designed?
I carved a huge log pendant out of wax and converted it with metal. The shift to a larger scale was a big step out of my comfort zone. Making a sculptural object that completely disregarded the body was a great exercise for me.RutaReifen
I’d love to hear the story behind your MA final project.
My MFA thesis work was a commentary to my observation on how we, as a modern western society, due to mass digital media, are exposed to sights we would have hardly come across otherwise in our daily lives. In my crafting process, I mimic the way I perceive the natural world rather than its appearance, in the form of flowery asymmetrical compositions.RutaReifen

What’s next? What is your dream?
I am now working on a new collection still dealing with the idea of “hyper reality”. I want to focus even more on wearable jewelry pieces. Little exaggerated treasures from nature- or are they?RutaReifen
I’m curious to know where does your inspiration come from?
I research, raise questions, and write; my work is always responding or related in some form to social phenomena.RutaReifen
Can you tell me which designers inspire you?
Every artist/designer is smart in a different way. I am lucky to have so many talented friends and so I guess it is my friends that are most Inspiring.RutaReifen
What about some web sites and blogs that you visit regularly?
I promise this is the honest truth- DesignBreak is my favorite, you are so design savvy and you feature such good work it is a pleasure to read your words!!
I also go on ‘wearable art’ occasionally, Design Milk, Design*Sponge, and of course- Anthropologie.
RutaReifen
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Two Women that are a true inspiration to me, RI based Jewelry artist and educator Noam Elyashiv said to me a few years ago: Don’t be afraid, just keep working! It made me realize that I shouldn’t waste my time on negative energy. And Biba Shutz a NY based Jewelry Artist and Metal sculpture said to me recently: If there are mice in your studio, sleep on the table! The Biba way saying be rigorous and committed.RutaReifen
If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Work in my studio!!! (- am I a workaholic?)RutaReifen
And finally, please do share something random or quirky about yourself!
I hate cooking with a passion. I miss my Mom’s cooking so much!!!RutaReifen
