What’s in The Box?!
  • Inbal Ithachi
  • NSAR
  • Yael Keila Sagi
  • moi moi
The Masters program at the Shenkar College is brand new but the talent that comes out of this super stylish school year after year is no stranger to you here on DesignBreak.
And now until June 9th you can have a piece of it at the Designer’s Days in Paris. All you have to do is buy a plane ticket to Paris, arrive at 74 Boulevard Richard Lenoir and once you are there, head to the What’s in The Box? pop-up shop. There you’ll find blind boxes with a pretty cool selection of accessories for you to grab.
To be honest I wouldn’t mind having any of the pieces by: Inbal Ithachi, NSAR, Yael Keila Sagi or moi moi.
All is left to say is: Au revoir!

Student Break | Shimrit Zagorsky | Camouflage Statement
“Urban Tribe” is the name behind Shimrit Zagorsky’s 3rd year collection at the Jewelry Design Department at the Shenkar College. I don’t know what about you but I could defiantly rock this shaving brush hair as my new accessory and I guess Shimrit knew what she is doing when it comes to statement pieces! You can’t get unnoticed with this. Right?
By now Shimrit is on her 4th year, which means her graduation collection is just two months away, and I can’t wait to see what she has been doing this past year!

2013 Graduate Shows. SF, Here We Go!
  • Francine Marquis // The Baccalaureate Exhibition
  • Dirk VanderMeer // The Baccalaureate Exhibition
  • Sara Sellitto // The MFA Graduate Show
  • Carmen Lang // The MFA Graduate Show
  • Margo Molowiec // The MFA Graduate Show
Up until now i’ve been used to visiting graduate shows back home in Israel each and every year I get super restless and can’t wait to see some really exciting and original designs. This year I won’t be able to do so BUT I have an opportunity to explore the ones in San Francisco and I’m up for the challenge. Going to unfamiliar territories, experiencing different perspectives and above all getting to know some new graduates. Over the weekend I began my 2013 Graduates journey and first was the California College of the Arts. I’ll tell you all about it but for now let me leave you with some of my favorite projects.

Student Break | Liron Loval | Nailing It
Let me share a little secret with you: I’ve been following Liron Loval’s artistic foot steps since her first year student at the Jewelry Design Department at the Shenkar College. I know, it’s crazy! BUT as crazy as it is I felt like there is something special about this super talented girl, and now the time has come to share with you one of her latest creations.
Liron decided to experiment with wood and metal in the most obvious way so she chose nails and wood, however as you can see, the outcome in not nearly obvious (!!!)

Student Break | Michal Fierstein | Woven Dreams
A collaboration between a huge company (aka Ikea) and one of the most exciting design departments in Israel (aka Shenkar’s Textile Design Department) can only mean heaven on earth! The 4th year students had to design “a big change at a small price” to make better everyday life for as many people around the world as possible. One of my absolute faves was Michal Fierstein and her two woven and hand painted crests. In Michal’s eyes, the mix between the traditional and modern techniques can be a bridge for lots of new ideas to invoke.

Student Break | Lihi Svirsky | Chasing Time
It’s funny how much I’ve missed writing my Student Breaks… I feel like they are my favorite of them all!
Lihi Svirsky is an industrial design student at the Shenkar College and while going through her portfolio I couldn’t decide which project I liked best… but finally I decided to share with you her Hourglass. I’m not really sure how to describe it rather than just show it to you… It’s such a slick and minimal design – exactly how I like it! Don’t you need this beauty in your home? Hello Kickstarter, I think you should hear about this one!

Student Break | Shoval Shavit | There’s an Elephant in My Tub
In Israel we don’t have too many water resources and that’s why we can’t turn on the water when we shower and go with the flow for as long as we want to. It doesn’t work that way (although sometime I wish it was). Anyways, with Shoval Shavit’s PILUSH, it looks like kids would love to save water or at least learn how to since it’s an “Inflatable bath toy that takes up an area and volume of the bath saves up to 60 liters”. It doesn’t sound like a bad idea, in fact I need my very own PILUSH!
FYI, Shoval is a forth year industrial design student at the Shenkar College.

Student Break | Mor Levy | Textile Extravaganza
It all began when Mor Levy played with transparent sellotape and the texture of her fingers were imprinted into it. We all did that at one point or another, the only difference is that in Mor’s case it turned out to be a textile extravaganza! She created sculptural textile objects that are weaved as a whole object while using rubber threads, polyester, cotton and linen. The only smart thing that I can say right now is that we all need a lot more of this Introspection! FYI, Mor is a 2012 graduate out of the Textile Design Department at the Shenkar College.

Student Break | Sovar Lerner | Ceramic Mutant
I should have pushed the “publish” button a long time ago but I just waited for the perfect pictures and finally they arrived to my inbox!
Sovar Lerner is one of those who made me stand and stare at their white ceramic sphere for quite a long time during the 2012 graduation show at the Bezalel Academy. Sovar refers to herself as a cultural mutant. East, West, Persian, Polish and a Russian. All of her mixed roots come to life in a series of ceramic mutants that represent the cultural differences that are part of the Israeli society.

Side Effects by The Bezalel Students
Something realy good is happening in Jerusalem over the past few years. So many exciting exhibitions and design events that I find myself keep coming back to the city time after time after time. Even today, after I finish writing this post, I’ll be heading to Jerusalem’s Design Week opening event and if you know me, you probably know that I’m super excited about Bezalel’s Side Effects Exhibition. I can’t help myself, I’m all about young, emerging students! In this exhibition, I’ll be seeing some new designs from the M.Des Master’s Degree in Industrial Design. This is just a heads up! I’ll be writing some more about it in a few weeks.

Student Break | Noam Tabenkin | Dr. Furniture
I’ve been meaning to write about Noam Tabenkin’s Furniture Hospital since 2010. Crazy but true… Who would have thought that two years can go by so quickly?!
Anyways, there is no way two little years will stand between me and writing a post regarding this spot on concept… In her graduation project Noam gave new life to damaged, out-of-use furnitures. The thing is that the way she mixed the old with the new and improved them make me want to damage some of my own furniture only so Noam could save them and give them the Tabenkin magic. Again, crazy but true!

Student Break | Yael Tandler | Baked Concrete
There is something quite interesting about the way Yael Tandler treats concrete as everyday dough. I mean, it’s obvious that you can knead it, but wanting to create unique objects while leaving the outcome to the force of gravity is not an easy decision for the common designer. For Yael it’s “a story about an everyday, basic material that creates unique objects in a domestic assembly line.” Yael’s concrete playground can be the beginning of endless possibilities and countless objects! FYI, Yael is an Industrial Design graduate fresh out of the Bezalel Academy.

Student Break | Hadar Glick | And Then They Where Six (Vases)
A loss is always a loss. Hadar Glick designed a series of six vases, each deals with the emotions that revolves around memory and loss. “In contrast to flowers, which wither and fade away with time, the vases are constant and serve as an eternal testimony of our memories.” Hadar’s goal was to allow people to express the memories of their loved ones at their own home… In a country which deals with death and grief from time to time, I find it hard not to appreciate the way Hadar puts her heart and soul into this super sensitive work of art. BTW, Hadar is a graduate of the H.I.T.

Student Break | Adi Hamer | Rocking Cabinets
Why does a cabinet have to stay still?
I don’t really know the answer but I like the way Adi Hamer is thinking! It’s fun getting a new perspective on objects we are familiar with. I mean, Adi’s cabinets are rad. There is no other way to put it. Her Cabinets “offer a different conception of the definition of objects. They evoke reflections on stability, the user – furniture – contents relationship, and meetings of aesthetics of one object with the functionality of another object.” Don’t know what about you but I’ll take one of each!
FYI, Adi is an Industrial Design graduate fresh out of the Bezalel Academy.

Student Break | Alan Zarczynski | A Wooden Jurassic Park
Boy do I miss playing with dolls! I mean, I know I can, but it would be super weird…
In Alan Zarczynski’s Vertebratoys “the wooden vertebrae simulate the volume and attributes of the animal, while the rope simulates the properties of the muscles and joints that support the animal. Their connection provides the unique flexibility that enables the assembly of a variety of different dinosaurs.”
It’s quite a wooden Jurassic Park ;)
FYI, Alan is a 2012 graduate of the Industrial Design Department at the Bezalel Academy.
