Student Break | Noam Tabenkin | Dr. Furniture
I’ve been meaning to write about Noam Tabenkin’s Furniture Hospital since 2010. Crazy but true… Who would have thought that two years can go by so quickly?!
Anyways, there is no way two little years will stand between me and writing a post regarding this spot on concept… In her graduation project Noam gave new life to damaged, out-of-use furnitures. The thing is that the way she mixed the old with the new and improved them make me want to damage some of my own furniture only so Noam could save them and give them the Tabenkin magic. Again, crazy but true!

Student Break | Yoav Brill | Dot.Dot.Dot
OK, now this is true polka dot madness!
I mean, with all the polka dots I see where ever I turn, and with that being also Kate Spade’s art of the dot fall theme, it makes perfect sense to share with you Yoav Brill’s Ishihara. Ishihara draws it’s name and inspiration from the visual tests used to detect color blindness. I won’t reveal anything else about the story cause you have to see it for yourself.
FYI, Ishihara was Yoav’s 2010 graduation project, at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, but in my defense only now I realised there is a living, breathing English version.
You can read a lot more about this animation, right here.

Student Break | Hanan Kedmi | Felting. The Low-Tech Version
You probably heard before about Hanan Kedmi’s super intriguing graduation project. However, when I laid my hands on his latest photo shoot, I had to share it with you. It doesn’t hurt that your wife is your personal photographer. You got it, this power couple is the one behind this “low-tech” production, as they like to call it. In Hanan’s “Felt Follows Form”, he experimented with recycled aluminum parts (computer heat sinks) and felt, which shielded them. The felt not only holds the parts together but is also woven into them! Did I mention he is brilliant?

Student Break | Roni Pinkas | Wearable Typography
When you mix two of my all time favorites, in this case typography and accessories, there is no way I’m gonna pass the opportunity to write about it even if it was created back in 2010. Roni Pinkas, the young designer behind all this typographic party, created it all as part of her graduate project at the Jewelry Design Department at Shenkar College.
I don’t know what about you, but I feel like I can wear each and every piece. Old typewriting keyboards, wooden letters, metal letters, contoured letters… I really don’t care, as long as it’s typolichius I’d be happy to wear it!

Lital Gold | Heaven On Earth

There is something quite intriguing and mysterious in Lital Gold’s never ending burst of colors and shadows. Since graduating last year from the Textile Design Department at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Lital is in drive mode! She keeps on going and going and with each and every sketch I get another glimpse of her inner soul (quite deep, I know but… that’s the way I feel).

DesignBreak Elsewhere | Interviewing Noa Himelfarb for the DMH

So… Do you remember Noa Himelfarb?
Well, lately I interviewed her for the Design Museum Holon Magazine.
You can read my “Do It Yourself” interview right here. Noa shared some behind the scenes insight which I found quite interesting.
Hope you like it as much as I did.

Student Break | Chen Fuchs | Candy Like

When is first saw Chen’s jewelry all I could think about was it feels like a meringue party.
I will leave you with my own wild imagination but if you want to find out more about Chen’s real intentions you can read it all right here.
BTW, Chen is a 2010 graduate of the Jewelry Design Department at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.

Student Break | Sivan Yahav Lotan | One Perfect Memory

Sometimes it’s not easy here at DesignBreak. Like when I get about twenty perfect photographs and I have to leave most of them out… Sivan, you gave me hard time ;)
Sivan is a 2010 graduate of the Jewelry Design Department of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. She dealt with the idea of flawless memory. “Each memory changes over time some details are forgotten, lost, mixed up or replaced and other parts become more meaningful and clearer. In Sivan’s world the memory materializes in the form of seaweed.

Student Break | Ori Sonnenschein | Smell Your Tableware

Ori is a 2010 graduate of the Industrial Design Department of Bezalel Academy of Art and Design. In his “Solskin Peels” graduation project he conducted a material investigation. “I focused on finding a local biodegradable and functional material. I found it in citrus peels. Through simple processing I could produce a lightweight, durable, biodegradable, water resistant material with a pleasant aroma, color and texture kitchen utensils”. What a brilliant idea! I’m loving the fact that your tableware can smell like oranges.

Student Break | Linor Shturem | Between Art And Design

Linor is a 2010 graduate of the Textile Design Department at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.
While writing this, Linor is in India clearing her mind, absorbing and being inspired…
Her graduation project was inspired by rusty objects. It all began with collecting old objects, tribal instruments, kitchen utensils and garden tools. Linor combined knitting linen thread with copper she manipulated.
Oxidation.Rust.Texture.Soft.Stiff.That’s what it’s all about. BTW, I wrote about Linor’s Nitca line a while back.

Student Break | Inbal Aderka | Watch it

Inbal is a 2010 graduate of the Industrial Design Department at Holon Institute of Technology.
I first laid my eyes on her plates.
Not long ago she wrote me about her graduation project that dealt with finding novel solutions for watches using inspiration from three basic materials: fabric, wood and plastic. As I’m all about the accessories, finding a unique piece is one of my life goals ;)
You’re probably laughing real hard right now… but I’m just being honest.

Student Break | Maya Dekel | Fields of memories

Maya Dekel is a recent graduate of the Textile Design Department at Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.
“The goal of the project is to create an experience for the user. This experience is rooted in a memory of observing a flourishing field, concentrating on its small details. It is a simultaneous experience of open space, breathing and freedom, exploration and surprise found in the details.”
Her “Field” is like a hideaway and the place where I want to rest my thoughts on…

Student Break | Hadas Shohat | Wear your stockings

Hadas has the wow factor.
A while back I was drawn to this pastel plastic diamond like necklace, that kept me staring at the shop’s window for a long time… Later, after connecting the dots I figured that the mind behind it is the same one that had me standing and staring at the graduate show. Same color palette, same virtuosity but different materials.

Student Break | Dikla Rozen | Flickery Vibe

“8.5/5.5″ is all about the visual impairment effect and the blurry feeling of it.
Dikla made me think about all those little things in life that you take for granted. But, above all her feathery necklace gave me goosebumps.
Boy, what wouldn’t I do to have this one wrapped around my neck!

Student Break | Aya Semo | Between the circle and the rhombus

I have a soft spot when it comes to designs that play with negative and positive space.
Aya’s space “between the circle and the rhombus” feels like an origami creation that made me want to spread it all and fold it back myself.
