Usually whenever I bumps into a new shoe catalog most of the time they all feel the same. The shoe is always center stage, usually on a white background and sometimes I spot an actual foot here and there. BUT this time it’s different, really different! The girls behind UnaUna (Almog and Mira) turned to some of their favorite artists and designers and asked them to create a compatible piece of art that will accompany each and every one of their summer 2013 collection aka Reaction. The outcome is refreshing, beautiful, sensitive and intriguing all at the same time.

Olive Thomas | Maya Levi | Welcome to The Jungle
Maya Levi keeps surprising me time after time and this time is no different with her Two by Two mini collection. The super energetic designer behind Olive Thomas, decided to go back to her graphic designer roots and created the most vibrant digital prints of bunch of flamingos (which I need!), horses and penguins. These prints compliment Maya’s three signature shoes so perfectly that I wonder if we’ll see more prints in the future.
AND… that’s not all! As Maya is one of a kind, with every purchase of a pair, she’ll send you a matching t-shirt just for fun.

Norman & Bella | Tal Arbel | Manly Me
If there was one time that I wished I was a man, it was when I bumped into Norman & Bella‘s Men’s collection.
I stopped keeping track of all my oxford shoes, but if there is a god out there, Tal Arbel, the designer behind this super slick brand, was thinking about all the ladies who really like the manly look. Size six and seven are awaiting just for us. Am I right, Tal?
FYI, there is a Her collection as well.

Shani Lax | All That Jazz
I’m super excited to introduce you to one more shoe designer, that used to be behind the scene, and now moved to the center stage with her LAX shoes.
Tap your shoes and welcome the glitz, gloss and glamorous Miss Shani Lax!
Shani’s debut mini collection surly gives you an “all that jazz” kind of feeling. On one hand, Shani was inspired by the Jazz dance shoes of the 20′s and on the other hand by the gray world of the working class during the great depression.
I guess we can look at it as a functional glam!

Shani Bar | The Summer Swan and Other Shoes
I’m not sure if I need to say too much other than saying Shani Bar!
I mean, this major shoe designer knows how to touch my heart or better yet, my feet. And as we are heading towards spring, color is the name of the game and Shani defiantly knows how to spice things up! One of the things I love most about Shani’s work is that in each and every collection (after listening to her costumers) there is another take on some of the old favorite shoes.
Just one last confession, I’m obsessed with the summer swan (and now all is left to do is pray for a flat version).

Roni Kantor | I’m Singing in the Rain
When I last wrote about Roni Kantor‘s collection, I made it pretty clear that I would love to visit her next catalog shoot… Luckily for me, Roni was super sweet to invite me. The sad thing is, I couldn’t make it and after seeing the final result it made me realize that next time I need to clear my schedule no matter what! In this Fall/Winter catalog, Roni played with some pretty amazing umbrellas, which made me want to snag them all. I cant’s stop talking about the catalog and I need to start talking about the shoes… FYI, the geometric elements are to die for!

Liebling Shoes | Fallin’ in Love Again
I think we all should set our seasonal alarm for the time Karni and Lior, the two behind Liebling, release to the world their collections. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sad that the fall winds are sneaking around the corner BUT the fact that each and every fall and then spring I can get my Liebling-ish fix makes things a bit more bearable. I know, I’m talking about shoes but these are not just shoes! See for your self, their brand new collection is nothing but pure perfection.

Walk | Anat Dahari | Walk the Walk
Oh boy, did I miss writing about shoes… I just love, love, love shoes!
Walk by Anat Dahari is one of those brands that don’t screams on the top of their lungs that they are here. You will notice them from across the room only if minimalism is you middle name. Well, I’m not sure what is my middle name, by now I’ve adopted so many but all I know for sure is I don’tmind adding a bunch of Anat Dahari’s beautiful shoes to my overflowed drawers. The fact that Anat is a certified Architect explains it all. Don’t you think?

Olive Thomas | Maya Levi | Hide and Seek
When you think about leather, you don’t necessarily think about transparency. Well, Maya Levi, the brilliant designer behind Olive Thomas, managed to make this crazy idea work. For her 2012 SS collection, she had fun layering different kinds of leather and by puncturing them, she created her very own unique textures!
Leaving the design aside for just a minute, the concept and the execution of the catalog, which was photographed by Sarai Kirshner, is like a breath of fresh air!
So colorful and simply happy.

One On One Break | Michal Miller | The Quiet Ones…

  • Nico
  • Wing
  • Lexi
  • Simple
As you are reading this, I’ll be on my way to the Accessories Market to pursue some of my favorite shoes of this super colorful Summer 2012 collections, including Michal Miller’s Nico Shoes. Not so long ago sweet Ellie Malin, wrote to me: “I will never understand how one small country has so many incredible shoe designers. My feet are so jealous!” I couldn’t agree more!
Well, Michal Miller is one of the quiet ones, however each and every season, her designs make some noise and I mean that in a good way! I was curious to learn more about her world so… Lets get on with my One On One with her.
Take it away, Michal!
michalmillershoes.blogspot.com
I’d love to hear about you, your journey, how it all began.
After graduating from Film & Television and East-Asian Studies at Tel Aviv University, I wasn’t sure what I wanted my day-time job to be like. Both majors didn’t have provide too many job opportunities in Israel.
One day I was walking my dog in Neve-Tzedek and came across an ad for a school that was about to open for footwear design and manufacturing, I was intrigued and signed up for the first course that opened.
The rest, as they say, is history…
MichalMiller
Can you describe your work process for me?
Each collection starts with a fundamental inspiration. For example, my Summer 2012 collection was designed not long after I gave birth to my son. I was of course inspired by the whole process of pregnancy, birth and the symbiosis and harmony between two entities living off and feeding off each other. After I have my basic sketches and ideas for the collection I start looking for materials that would translate my ideas into reality. I begin a second process of design, only now with the materials I’ve acquired. Then the sketches go to the modelist, who turns them into 2D patterns. Together with the factory we make a preliminary sample, try it on and then the process of changing and fitting, until we reach the perfect fit and design. Then the design is ready for production and goes through cutting, sewing, forming on the last, placing the sole and heels and the final finishes before going into the box.
Each pair is handmade and goes through various craftsmen until it reaches the final destination.
MichalMiller
Which materials do you work with?
All shoes are made of leather (upper and insoles) and the soles are made out of non-slip rubber.MichalMiller
What is the most unusual piece you have ever designed?
In school we had a project to make shoes inspired by a villian. I made black and white leather men’s moccasins that looked like the face of Hitler.MichalMiller
  • Sheba
  • Flower
  • Wing
What’s next? What is your dream?
To keep on growing and becoming a household name, and to expand the business worldwide.MichalMiller
I’m curious to know where does your inspiration come from?
I’m inspired by my day to day life, nature, watching fashion and faces on the streets. My studies in university are also a constant inspiration – old films, Eastern aesthetics…MichalMiller
Can you tell me which designers inspire you?
Too many to list… at the moment I’m in love with Céline and it’s creative director Phoebe Philo and I always liked the swedish and Japanese designer’s aesthetics.MichalMiller
Can you tell me which web sites and blogs you visit regularly?
Before I had a kid, I would sit for hours roaming the web for inspiration. Now I go to the basics – Style.com, The Sartorialist, Jak & Jil and the Israeli blog I love Josh.MichalMiller
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
Sleep on it!MichalMiller
If you had an extra hour each day what would you do with it?
Probably have some time for myself – take a bath, a massage, go for a date with my other half. Stuff our busy schedules don’t allow at the moment.MichalMiller

Shani Bar | Bring It On, I Mean The Shoes!
You know how it feels, when you have a favorite shoe designer and it’s almost like there is no way your wallet is going to survive the launch of her new collection. What I’m saying is, with SO many shoes I need to have, it’s almost impossible to choose!
That’s exactly what happens to me each and every season and this 2012 Summer Collection, by the lovely Shani Bar, is no different. The fact that there are lots and lots of yellow shoes in this collection, makes things a bit crazy for me. You know, with my obsession with all things yellow and all ;)
Here are exhibit A, exhibit B, exhibit C!

MyShoeBreak | In the Mood for Some Stripes
It’s been a while since my last ShoeBreak and there’s no better time for a new one, now that I’ve received my own stripy shoes.
Since the last weeks have been nothing but sunny, I have a feeling that things are looking up.
Here’s for a colorful and bright summer!

Natalie Ve Tamar | Shoes that Make You Go Ummm…
Speaking of shoes… I hope you don’t mind getting a double dose of them two days in a row.
-
Since I first bumped into Natalie Ve Tamar almost six months ago, I kept wondering if there would be any chance I’d be blown away again. And if you are wondering…the answer is YES! The attention to the smallest details, the perfect stitches and just the right curves! I feel like Tamar Shalem, the lady behind it all, should be on my speed dial ;)
BTW, can you guess which pair has my name written all over them?

Hagar Wertheim | Hug Your Shoes
Last night I couldn’t sleep, actually I woke up at 3AM and found myself looking for inspiration on the web. Luckily for me, one of my sweet blogger friends Morgane, just commented on one of Hagar Wertheim’s posts. And so, right there and then my journey began. An illustrated blog and one with lots and lots of illustrated shoes is my kind of heaven! 1 Hug a Day (such a sweet and lovable name, isn’t it?) is by far my best revelation, thanks to Morgane ;)
Don’t know what about you, but I’m going to visit each an every day from now on in order to get my daily hug!
Oh, and this is the apropriate time to wish Hagar lots of luck in finding her dream job!
